Sensational Sixes

Creativity and Science…it’s a beautiful thing!

Who says that science lessons cannot be creative? The grade sixes are busy creating eco-systems in order to better understand the concept as well as to show their understanding of food-chains and food-webs.

They are working in groups and had to decide on an eco-system of their own choosing. After researching their chosen eco-system, they have to find a way to recreate it on paper. They have been encouraged to use paint, pastels, fabric or even real materials sourced from an actual  eco-system. I look forward to seeing the final products!

Our first ILT

Last week the grade sixes were involved in their first ILT for the year. The overall task was to create an environmental documentary which would raise awareness about an issue which the children feel passionately about.

The project was broken down into smaller activities such as researching the issue, collating and sifting through the information, preparing and recording a debate, writing a letter to government officials as well as staging a protest!

It was amazing to see how well the children coped with the task and how creatively they put their documentaries together. It was most certainly an absolute success and enjoyed by all!

‘My surname’ Orals.

During the last few weeks the grade sixes have been presenting orals based on their surnames and their family history. It has been a really fun and interesting way to get to know the children and the English teachers have thoroughly enjoyed listening to them.

This was used as a ‘warm up’ oral for the year, just to get one under the belt and to take away the usual anxiety which accompanies the first oral.

It was also great to see how much the children learned about their families and their ancestry through this activity.

The beautiful Intaka Island.

This past week the Grade 6 classes visited Intaka Island. For those of you who haven’t been this is a little environmentally friendly jewel nestled in the heart of Century City. Here we learned about being green in the way that we live, design our living spaces and handle our natural environments.

Our activities included an educational tour of the island which included some very interesting facts about our natural flora and fauna. (If by chance you don’t know what that means, ask your child, they discussed it in SS this week!) We were also treated to a boat ride on the canals, all the way to Canal Walk mall and back. For our final activity we went “fishing”, exploring the water of the vlei and all that lives in it.

All in all a very interesting and inspiring time was had by all. If you have not already visited Intaka Island, we highly recommend that do so and allow your child to give you the guided tour!

Gr 6 Beach Outing

The Grade 6 pupils enjoyed an incredible day out at Small Bay, Bloubergstrand on Friday 31 January. The weather was perfect and the wind behaved, allowing us a few glorious hours in the sun! A wonderful way to kick off the year!
