Over the last three days the Grade 6 pupils have been working on their first ever Grade 6 ILT. The task was both a challenging and exciting one.
In groups of four or five, each group had to decide on an environmental issue that they felt strongly about and create an environmental documentary to highlight this cause. They came up with all sorts of interesting causes such as water pollution, deforestation, marine pollution and many also chose to focus on concerns around specific animals.
There were many skills which the children need to hone to complete this task. They had to research information on their cause, write and practice a debate for and against, film a peaceful protest with a suitable placard and chant to make a stand for their cause.
There was also a letter that need to be written to parliament in which they needed to make the members aware of the severity of their chosen cause.
Their documentary also included a motivational closing and all of this needed to be in the form of a professional documentary and completed in the three days.
What a fun and enjoyable way in which to bring awareness to some very important causes and what better voice can we have than those of our future!
A Visit to Intaka Island
On Wednesday the 17th and Thursday the 18th of February, the Gr 6 pupils visited Intaka Island in Century City. It is a fascinating place as it is situated right in the heart of Century City amongst all the buildings. It is a natural wetland that has been looked after through all the development around it. It is a place of sanctuary for the birds. We took a trip around the wetlands by boat, learnt about alternative sources of energy, and had the opportunity to learn more about our local bird population. A place of great beauty amongst the concrete jungle, we recommend you visit the island yourself!
Experiments are always a great way to gain real understanding in the Science classroom. They give the children hands-on experience and are usually so much fun that every child is actively involved in the lesson.
Recently we learned about food groups and we used iodine to test various foods for starch. Needless to say, the rice and bread elicited some really great responses and interest!
Over the last few weeks we have been learning all about electricity and this gave us an excellent opportunity to experiment with and investigate different ways of creating our own electricity.
A great deal was learned and much fun was had by all!
